Picnic Food Ideas

Picnic food ideas can be pretty simple or very complex depending on how involved you would like to get. Everyone probably knows the basics, sandwich meat, bread, and chips; this is probably the most basic picnic food setup you can conjure up. And there is nothing wrong with that sandwiches are good!

A way to make those same ol’ sandwiches a little more interesting is to upgrade some of the ingredients for your outdoor adventure. First thing I would do for the picnic idea is upgrade the bread. Go to the bakery department of your grocery store and choose a nice fresh bread  instead of the old bagged white or wheat bread you find down the aisle. Most bakery departments have a selection of breads to choose from, for example sour dough, once you select the bread ask them to cut it for you. They will be more than happy to cut your bread loaf into individual slices. If you don’t want to or have time to wait on them try grabbing a fresh bag from the same department. They usually have fresh bags of bread rolls or hoagies types and other selections.

The next picnic upgrade idea is to choose your meat and your condiments. Aside from those you can pick out different “toppings” to go along with your sandwich. The best thing to do would be to look up a nice recipe, but if you are willing to try something new for your outing you will find several choices to choose from.

Try artichoke hearts! On the sandwich artichoke hearts from a jar can be very good! Be careful which meat your pair it with though I have never tried them with bologna but just be aware of the “normal” sandwich meats these ingredients are paired with. Olives from a jar are another good topping to add more flavor and mushrooms can go with many different varieties of meat.

Some “sides” to choose from could be pickles and chips. When you choose the chips try getting something you normally don’t get, maybe try a gourmet chip. It will add to your adventure!

Starbucks instant coffee flavors

Starbucks indicates that they have found a way to make instant coffee tase just as good as a regular cup of coffee. I would have to agree! While shopping one day we came across a Starbucks “Representative” handing out samples of the Starbucks Instant coffee singles, probably without having a free sample it would have taken me longer to take the plunge and pay good money for an instant coffee single.

Anyway, after having tried the single it a “time crunch” they taste pretty amazing! The singles have real flavor compared to the other brands of singles. I have tried the Tasters Choice, Maxwell House, and Foldgers instant singles, nothing compares to the Starbucks brand- not even close!

The single comes in a fine powder as compared to others who use large chunks a “grains.” The dissolving of the fine grain compared to the larger is about the same. The flavor however is where Starbucks coffee blows the competition out of the water. If you need singles in a crunch, used for emergencies or on some days when you are on the run, definitely try out the Starbucks coffee singles. Here is a list of current flavors of the coffee they offer.

  • Cinnamon flavored coffee
  • Colombia coffee
  • Vanilla coffee
  • Caramel Coffee
  • Mocha flavor
  • Italian Roast

Ice Cream

Ice cream is a dessert made from dairy and is usually served in a frozen form. Although the specific origins of Ice cream is difficult to determine it is suggested that the dessert was invented hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Some of the original places ice cream had been discovered include China, Italy, and Rome; ice cream had not been reported in the United States until around 1700’s. Jacob Fussell is credited with opening the first ice cream factories in the United States in the 1800’s. Ice cream parlors became a popular destination for many seeking the cold dessert, ice cream.

Peanut Butter

One of the most interesting peanut butter flavors I found was called butter and honey.

Butter and Honey / honey: I have not tried this flavor but I am willing to give it a chance. It is hard to find a peanut butter that is different from the classics like plain and crunchy.

Plain and crunchy peanut butter are probably the best ones but don’t rule out the other flavors. Try the natural peanut butter for a change, even though it is the same product it has a different taste to it.

Extra Crunchy! I got extra crunchy one time and has a hard time finishing the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, it was loaded with peanuts! I know it said extra crunchy but this was crazy! Even the regular crunchy is loaded up with nuts, I would like to see a “less crunchy” version hit the shelves.

Low fat and reduced fat peanut butters are available from most producers just check the shelves at the local grocery store.
