Triscuit flavors

Triscuits are a delicious healthy snack made by Nabisco that originated back at the turn of the century – 1903! They are whole wheat crackers that when first made were produced and distributed with a simple plain “original” flavoring. Because the original flavor is so plain, they became enjoyable to eat with various toppings (much like crackers). Popular toppings include all kinds of cheeses, various fruits (such as strawberries on top of ricotta), and even “chip” toppings like guacamole.

How to Make the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich

perfect grilled cheese sandwichThere is nothing better when you’re craving comfort food than a grilled cheese sandwich! The flavor or bread and melted cheese perfectly combined is one that carries memories of childhood and of home. Luckily, these memories do not have to live in your mind, as it is fairly simple to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich yourself at home!

Ingredients:
The ingredient list for a grilled cheese sandwich is very simple. You’ll need:

  • Bread
  • Cheese (American Cheese slices are best! Second best is Sharp Cheddar)
  • Butter

Recipe:
Again, simpler is better! Here are the steps to make a basic grilled cheese.

1. Start to preheat your skillet. It is essential that you start with the skillet heated up (but not too hot!). You’ll know it’s the right temperature if you take a drop of water and drop it in the middle of the pan. It should sizzle and disappear in a second or two.
**Note: Do not put the stovetop all the way up to the highest setting!! This will burn your grilled cheese and ruin it!**

2. While the skillet is preheating, take your slices of bread and butter one side of each bread slice. (2 slices will make one sandwich, so butter as many as you need for as many sandwiches you want).
**Note: You can use wheat or white bread, however for the perfect flavor and the perfect grilled cheese, white bread (though less healthy for you) will taste better!

3. If you’re using American cheese, take a slice and put it in between the bread slices.  If you’re using cheddar, slice some cheese and put the cheese inside the slices of buttered bread. When you are done putting in the cheese, the buttered side should be up (facing out) on each of the bread slices.
**Note: If using cheese you cut, the thinner you cut the cheese, the better and faster it will melt. Try to be consistent in the thickness of the cheese slices so it melts the same across the whole sandwich. You can layer really thin slices on top of each other, but the optimal amount of cheese you want is about how much you’d get in a pre-packaged slice of American cheese.

4. Put the sandwich in the skillet and cook it until it is lightly browned. Flip it and do the same on the other side. The cheese should be completely melted in the inside. If it’s not, you can flip it over again and again until it’s ready.
**Note: Be very careful not to burn the bread! This is the quickest way to ruin your sandwich! Optimally, both sides of bread should be browned about the same amount).

5.  You’re done!! Enjoy! Your grilled cheese should taste excellent!

Variations of the basic grilled cheese sandwich:
The best grilled cheese is the simple version with just cheese. If you want to get more complicated however, you can add all sorts of things to the inside of the sandwich to give it a different flavor – the most popular twists are to add slices of tomato or slices of ham.  Een though there are extra ingredients on the inside, you’ll still cook it the same way.

How to Doctor Up Spaghetti Sauce

So you’re on a time crunch and you want to make spaghetti, but you’re not super crazy about that canned sauce you have in the cabinet. There is a solution! With just a tiny bit of effort you can very easily doctor up that spaghetti sauce to make it taste almost homemade! Sound too good to be true? It’s not!

Total time from start to finish is less than 30 minutes!
Here’s how to do it:

Ingredients:

Canned (or bottled) spaghetti sauce

The rest of the ingredients – how many, or how few – are up to you! You’re on a time crunch, right? So let’s just use whatever you have in your fridge – anything that would typically go in spaghetti sauce will work. In order to make the sauce taste homemade and extra special, ideally you’ll have at least two of the following ingredients:

chopped Onions
2 cloves of Garlic
Ground Beef (or Pork)
Bell Pepper
Sliced Mushroooms

Spices:
1 tsp Oregano
1 tsp Basil
1 tsp Thyme

Instructions:
1.  Empty the can of spaghetti sauce into your sauce pan, put on a lid and turn the heat to medium low. Add any of the spices you have from the spice list noted above. Stir the sauce, and let it come to a low simmer.

2.  Now, while the spaghetti sauce is heating up, in a separate skillet – if you’ve decided on adding ground beef (or pork), saute it until it’s cooked and add a little salt (to taste). Once the meat is fully cooked, drain the fat, and add the meat into your saucepan with the spaghetti sauce.

3.  Next, if you have have any vegetables noted above (bell pepper, onion, or mushrooms), you’ll want to shop and/or slice them. Make sure the bell pepper is thickly chopped (in bite size pieces), the onion is chopped, and the mushrooms are sliced. You’ll add a little oil to a skillet, and brown whatever vegetables you have to the skillet. Saute until they’re just tender. When done, add them to the spaghetti sauce.

4.  Finally, if you have any garlic, mince the garlic, and saute quickly in an oiled skillet. Be careful as garlic cooks fast and can burn quickly (this is why you’re doing it separately from the vegetables). When lightly browned, add to the spaghetti sauce.

5.  Once all vegetables and meat are added, bring the spaghetti sauce to a low simmer for about 10 – 15 minutes.

Enjoy! You’re done!! Your spaghetti sauce will taste almost homemade – close enough you’re likely to fool some of your friends and family! 😉
